As West Asia reels from spreading protests against standing governments it has been interesting to watch the reactions from Washington. Yemen, Jordan, and Bahrain, among others, have leaders anxiously dealing with outbursts of demonstrations demanding change. Some are certainly authoritarian and lacking in basic human and civil rights so that the public attitudes are quite understandable. What seems mystifying... #WestAsia #Authoritarianism #QuietRevolution #US #Jordan #Bahrain #China #Yemen #MiddleEast #Egypt #Democratization

With the success of popular protests in the African states of Tunisia and Egypt the demand to remove autocratic leaders has spread to the Middle East. West Asia nations such as Bahrain and Yemen have had public demonstrations which have turned violent. The unpleasant side of ending tyranny could be far worse than most imagine.

It would seem that Russia is joining Cold War II in Asia. It would seem that the first cold war was just not enough for the former Soviet Union. At least for now, Russia is siding with the Chinese Alliance and is helping Beijing to bully Japan. Japan has been tied up in a row with China over the Senkaku Islands (Diaoyu Islands in #IndianAlliance #Korea #Senkaku #NorthKorea #Afghanistan #ColdWarII #ChineseAlliance #Vietnam #Russia #Philippines #India #Wen #Hu #Pakistan #SouthKorea #China #Diaoyu #Japan #HoppouRyoudo

Zone Asia has, in recent times, expressed opinions regarding the future of North Korea. However, a member of South Korea’s ruling party has described a situation that was not considered here before. His idea is that faced with total economic collapse North Korea might opt to simply become a part of China. But is that outcome likely? #Korea #IndianAlliance #US #NorthKorea #KimJongil #ColdWarII #SouthKorea #Reunification #KimJongun #China

More than a week ago the Communist Party of China (CPC) through its official publication, the People’s Daily, condemned discussion of political reform. They implied that China had no need to import foreign, Western ideas and that the government needed to concentrate on economic affairs. A conservative cadre, it seems, had a firm grip on the party, quashing hopes for #IndianAlliance #Korea #Sinofication #Senkaku #US #NorthKorea #ColdWarII #ChineseAlliance #Vietnam #Myanmar #India #Pakistan #SouthKorea #China #Diaoyu #Japan #WenJiabao #Bangladesh

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Hanoi started off well for China. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao made statements about settling territorial disputes with Vietnam and other nice, diplomatic pleasantries well suited to a meeting of great diplomatic importance. The People’s Daily newspaper of the Communist Party of China has been running articles harshly criticizing recent calls for the restructuring of government. Sadly, this restructuring would introduce more public accountability and the power of individuals to speak more freely –moves towards democracy. The Quiet Revolution is in trouble.

South Korea is ripe with rumors that Kim Jong-un, the son and designated successor to North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il, will not remain in power for long. China has been taking some big risks lately. It may have gone too far, leaving Japan in a position to decide its fate. Not exactly the situation Beijing had in mind.
After a run in with Chinese fishermen near the Senkaku Islands (Diaoyu Islands in China) Japan has had nothing but grief from Beijing. Just when you think things could not get worse for China, Beijing goes and shoots itself is the foot again. The bureaucracy there just does not know what its doing lately. Which prompts the question once again, “Who exactly is in charge there?”

Democracy includes the right to free speech. Free speech as it is understood in the West has no history in the culture of China. Beijing has a lot to learn.

The Senkaku Islands are still haunting Asia. Several weeks ago Japan’s Coast Guard arrested a fishing boat crew from China after colliding with their ship. The boat was in the waters of the Senkaku Islands, also known as Diaoyu in China. Beijing protested loudly until Tokyo released all their prisoners.
