As West Asia reels from spreading protests against standing governments it has been interesting to watch the reactions from Washington. Yemen, Jordan, and Bahrain, among others, have leaders anxiously dealing with outbursts of demonstrations demanding change. Some are certainly authoritarian and lacking in basic human and civil rights so that the public attitudes are quite understandable. With the success of popular protests in the African states of Tunisia and Egypt the demand to remove autocratic leaders has spread to the Middle East. West Asia nations such as Bahrain and Yemen have had public demonstrations which have turned violent. The unpleasant side of ending tyranny could be far worse than most imagine.
