Trade off w IT, czyli wolność wyboru vs. wolność od wyboru Trade off oznacza to, że poprawa w jednej części systemu może się wiązać z pogorszeniem w innej. Z takim "coś za coś" mają do czynienia np. konsumenci decydujący o wyborze sprzętu komputerowego. Wybierają między zamkniętymi, a otwartymi platformami. Cloud powering, to zbiór technologii inspirowanych bezpośrednio przez cloud computing, a jednocześnie rozwiązanie stanowiące doskonałe uzupełnienie koncepcji chmury jako takiej. Całość opiera się na prostym założeniu, że wiele zasilaczy UPS, generatorów prądu i innych urządzeń odpowiedzialnych za gwarancję zasilania – i to zarówno małych, jak i dużych mocy – połączonych razem, może stworzyć coś na kształt chmury energetycznej o bardzo dużym zapasie mocy (teoretycznie nieskończenie wielkim tak długo, jak do chmury przyłączane są nowe urządzenia).
