Fifty-two people dead, hundreds wounded, the Freedom Fighters of Yemen press on, and it is beginning to look as if the end of the battle could be near. Bloody Friday will not be forgotten by the Yemeni people as snipers poised atop nearby buildings fired on unsuspecting protestors. President Saleh had no choice but to declare a day of mourning for the dead, but it may be the end of t... #WestAsia #Authoritarianism #US #Bahrain #UntiedArabEmirates #Saleh #SaudiArabia #Yemen #MiddleEast #Democratization

A strange yet compelling theory was offered to me recently. The idea is that the current “revolutionary” disputes in the Middle East were instigated by the U.S., or at least by American interests. I would have ignored it as another wild conspiracy notion had it not occurred to me that such an action would help explain the continuing efforts by the U.S. to ignite a “Jasmine Revolution” in C... #WestAsia #Authoritarianism #Military #US #Revolution #China #MiddleEast #Democratization

Since the 9/11 terror attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon Osama bin Laden and his Al Qaeda organization have topped Washington’s most wanted list. Billions of dollars and years have been spent to hunt for bin Laden and to eradicate Al Qaeda. In fact, U.S. soldiers are still in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The West Asia side of the Middle East continues to reel from protests and demonstrations. The youth of Yemen have not given up despite the violence inflicted upon them recently. Bahrain is due for more anti-government outbursts. British Prime Minister Cameron admitted this past week that Western powers like his own and the U.S. were wrong to have supported the authoritarian states of West A... #WestAsia #UK #DeclineOfTheAmericanEmpire #US #Bahrain #China #Yemen #MiddleEast #Democratization

How do you keep 1.3 billion people happy? The first priority is likely to ensure that everyone has enough to eat. That is a huge task, but one that China faces. Imagine if you have a billion people who are hungry and getting angry.

As West Asia reels from spreading protests against standing governments it has been interesting to watch the reactions from Washington. Yemen, Jordan, and Bahrain, among others, have leaders anxiously dealing with outbursts of demonstrations demanding change. Some are certainly authoritarian and lacking in basic human and civil rights so that the public attitudes are quite understandable. What seems mystifying... #WestAsia #Authoritarianism #QuietRevolution #US #Jordan #Bahrain #China #Yemen #MiddleEast #Egypt #Democratization

With the success of popular protests in the African states of Tunisia and Egypt the demand to remove autocratic leaders has spread to the Middle East. West Asia nations such as Bahrain and Yemen have had public demonstrations which have turned violent. The unpleasant side of ending tyranny could be far worse than most imagine.

The People’s Daily newspaper of the Communist Party of China has been running articles harshly criticizing recent calls for the restructuring of government. Sadly, this restructuring would introduce more public accountability and the power of individuals to speak more freely –moves towards democracy. The Quiet Revolution is in trouble.

China has been taking some big risks lately. It may have gone too far, leaving Japan in a position to decide its fate. Not exactly the situation Beijing had in mind.
After a run in with Chinese fishermen near the Senkaku Islands (Diaoyu Islands in China) Japan has had nothing but grief from Beijing. Democracy includes the right to free speech. Free speech as it is understood in the West has no history in the culture of China. Beijing has a lot to learn.

The Communist Party of China will “die a natural death” if the public does have basic human rights. One would expect something like this was written by Nobel Prize winning dissident Liu Xiaobo. However, this was written by twenty-three senior retired party members. #Reform #CommunistPartyOfChina #Democracy #LiuXiaobo #Censorship #QuietRevolution #中国无声的革命 #China #PeoplesLiberationArmy #PLA #PlenarySession #WenJiabao #Democratization
