As West Asia reels from spreading protests against standing governments it has been interesting to watch the reactions from Washington. Yemen, Jordan, and Bahrain, among others, have leaders anxiously dealing with outbursts of demonstrations demanding change. Some are certainly authoritarian and lacking in basic human and civil rights so that the public attitudes are quite understandable. Sadly, this restructuring would introduce more public accountability and the power of individuals to speak more freely –moves towards democracy. The Quiet Revolution is in trouble.
